Food Service
Keep food healthly and help protect the environment with food packaging that is free of harmful chemicals, and will break down safely after use. Did you know many companies are selling food and drinks in packaging that leaches chemicals which end up in our bodies? Green Shift tackled this issue nearly 30 years ago, becoming the first company in Canada to offer paper cups lined with a safe (and certified biodegradable) vegetable coating (instead of a petroleum stew). Always avoid having toxins leach into both your food and the environment, by choosing packaging that is free of harmful chemicals. The packaging will also break down safely after use.
Office Supplies
Copy Paper and Envelopes are often made with virgin trees and treated with harsh chemicals for whitening or colouring. Sadly, the most common supplies are often even from trees poached from countries that do not have the money to protect their land. Our office paper is made from our blue box recycling materials – sometimes as much as 100% of it! The white copy paper is bleached with oxygen instead of chlorine, and the dyes are natural and safe not synthetic and toxic. Please consider this for your office!
Paper Amenities
Of all things, these staples should absolutely be made from post consumer recycled content, and void of unnecessary chemicals! Sadly, most toilet paper is made from virgin forests and bleached with chlorine. Forests are the home for wildlife, and play an inportant role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The alternatives we offer contain recycled paper fibres, and are whitened with oxygen instead of chlorine, or, better yet, they are left natural and not whitened at all. Please help us to make this the norm.
Cleaning Products
With so many cleaning products being used in homes and businesses, it’s shocking to know that Canadian law does NOT require labelling of hazardous chemicals, if they are less than 1% of the product’s total composition. This incredibly short sighted view ignores the accumulative effects, not to mention the downstream impact on nature and microorganisms. Most cleaning, even stubborn jobs, can be done safely with locally made, non-toxic, non-synthetic ingredients. For your health and the health of all living things, please choose safe and natural options for cleaning.
A few words about greening through products:
When Green Shift began, the founder was an environmental auditor with Environment Canada and an analyst with the US Green Seal Certification Agency. Green Shift began as a consulting company so we were doing product analysis and use to just source, screeen, and make arrangements for distributors to supply the best products to our clients. We soon realized however that the suppliers would commonly switch companies back to less desirable options, as they had existing relationships with other manufacturers, and those less eco options generally had a higher profit margin. We realized, the only way to guarantee reliable access to the most environmental options was to develop a distribution division ourselves; hence the development of our GreenSupplyHouse.
Our goal in 1999 when we began was to make it easy and cost effective for companies to be green, and to stop the idea that environmental products are merely for a niche market that should or would pay a higher price tag.
To this end, Green Shift carefully sources and investigates products and the companies behind them, because green washing is rampant. Not to mention that while a product itself may be “green” one should always consider what the profits from that product will be fueling. As such, Green Shift performs life cycle analyses, works with manufacturers to ensure higher standards are met and maintained, negotiates good pricing in exchange, and finds a way to make these solutions a no-lose decision for buyers. A great benefit is that we get to see first hand who really is looking for solutions and who likes to just talk about it.
To heighten the value of what we are doing, we operate a form of endorsement program with a goal of creating a looping support network of good responsible companies and organizations – from manufacturers through to the end consumers.
A lot of the products we deal in are not glamorous. We have instead focused on mass use items that should have been replaced long ago.
